BALA CHATURDASHI

An all-night vigil by the light of small wick lamps marks the beginning of Bala Chaturdashi. The festival of Bala Chaturdashi is a celebration in Nepal that is held at Pashupatinath Temple near Kathmandu every year in late November or early December. Hindu pilgrims from all over Nepal, as well as India, gather at Pashupatinath temple, which is considered to be the most sacred temple of Shiva (Pashupati), in Nepal. Throughout the night the pilgrims chant and dance by the light of their lamps while paying homage to Lord Shiva. At daybreak, worshippers make their way down to the holy Bagmati River for ritual bathing. The Bagmati flows through the Kathmandu Valley and has a number of Hindu temples located on its banks. It is considered to be the holiest river by both Buddhists and Hindus. Hindus are cremated on the banks of the Bagmati and the Nepalese Hindu tradition requires that the dead body be dipped three times into the river prior to cremation.

CHHATH PARWA

Chhath Parva, attracts thousands of pilgrims to the holy town of Janakpur in south-eastern Nepal. But it is celebrated all over Nepal including Kathmandu where people from the Terai gather along the banks of rivers especially Bagmati to worship. The goal they say is to achieve purity both physical and spiritual. Devotees from Nepal and India throng the ancient city of Janakpur to worship at the famous Janaki Temple and take ritual baths in the rivers and ponds. It is a three-day festival with the first day spent in cleaning the kitchen and preparing for the fast. On the second day, devotees fast from the morning and spend the day preparing their offerings of fruits, sweets and nuts etc. In the evening they gather at the banks of rivers and ponds to wait for the sun to set. They light lamps, sing songs and wade into the water to pray and make offerings to the fading sun. Lighted oil-wick lamps are set afloat on the river and it is a beautiful sight to behold. After the sun goes down the devotees return home. The worshippers are almost exclusively women with most men just watching. The ritual is repeated the next morning at dawn when they wait for the sun to rise. As the sun comes up over the horizon there is euphoria and devotees scramble to offer prayers, holy water, fruits, coconuts and sacred threads.

GOBARDAN PUJA

Goru Puja or ox worship and Govardan Puja are being observed throughout the country Thursday on the fourth day of the five-day-long Tihar festival celebrated by the Hindus in tcountry. The Govardhan Puja rituals are being observed Thursday with the replicas of the Govardhan Mountain made out of the cow dung. People prepare a mixture of the cow dung and ochre formed into a paste and apply on the courtyard of their homes and on the floors today. The rituals are linked to the Hindu God Sri Krishna who, according to the legend, lifted the Govardhan Mountain by his hand and protected the people of a place called Gokul from torrential rains caused by Indra, the God of rain. It is believed that the rain God was angered and thereby caused the heavy downpour.

LAXMI PUJA

As a part of Deepawali or Tihar, Lakshmi Pooja is celebrated on the third day especially in October or November according to the solar calendar. On this specious occasion, people worship Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, power, luxury, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. Most of the Hindus believe that worshipping Laxmi genuinely for fortune and success. People still believe that Goddess Laxmi enters and resides in the place of hard work, virtue, and bravery. In Nepal, Laxmi Puja is celebrated as a part of Tihar-the second largest festival of Nepalese people and is celebrated for 5 days. These include Kag (crow) Tihar, Kukur (dog) Tihar, Gai (cow) Tihar in the morning and Laxmi pooja at night, Maha puja (self puja) or Goru (Ox and Bull) Tihar or Gobardhan Puja; and finally, Bhai Tika (Bhai dhooj) counting the first, second, third, fourth and fifth days respectively.

BIJAYA DASHAMI

Happy Dashain On the day of Bijaya Dashami, today, the Goddess of the festival should be disposed of in rivers and ponds as per religious rituals (bisarjan) at 8.19 am and the auspicious hour of receiving tika is 10.2 am, according to Prof Shree Krishna Adhikari, President of the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee. Although the auspicious hour for receiving Prasad of Devi has been fixed 10.2 am today as per the requirement of the calendar, the entire day after the immersion of the Goddess is auspicious for that purpose, Prof Adhikari said. The worship of Sri Durga Bhawani at Dasain ghars over nine days concludes formally on the day of Bijaya Dashami after the Abhishekh or sprinkling of holy water takes place marking the beginning of tika. People receive tika and jamara till the full moon day. Tika and jamara are considered the auspicious gifts of the goddess Nawa Durga and they signify prosperity. It is believed that one need not seek an auspicious hour if one undertakes any new assignment, campaign or journey on the auspicious day of Bijaya Dashami.

Navratri has brought Fulpati and Ashtami to Mahanavami. On the ninth day of Navratri, we have to prepare for the tika tomorrow. How is Dashain going? Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, many good wishes of Bada Dashain! Today is the ninth day of Navratri, today is the day of special worship of Mother Siddhidhatri as the ninth power of Goddess Durga and along with her worship of Goddess Mahalakshmi. Today, it is believed that by worshiping Siddhidhatri as a power, one can achieve perfection that can conquer the whole world and nothing in the world is inaccessible for them. According to the Devi Purana, Shivaji himself has attained perfection due to the infinite mercy of this goddess. The lotus flower is the favorite object of these goddesses sitting over the lion as her wagon. There is a belief that by practicing them, one will attain salvation in both this world and the hereafter, and it is mentioned in the Markandeya Purana that if the Siddhidhatri is pleased and gives a gift as a power, all the desires of the seeker will be fulfilled.

FULPATI

Fulpati : Dashain is not just a festival of fun. It has many features and importance. There are social significance, which unites the society. It has religious significance, which conveys the message that power and truth prevail. It has economic significance, which leads to a booming market for everything from clothing to food. There is emotional significance, which brings distant relatives together. Dashain is a festival of harmony. It is a festival of unity. Overall, it is a part of our way of life. From Ghatsthapana, Dashain begins duly. Tick ​​on the tenth day of gestation. That is the day to get vaccinated from relatives, Ganyamanya. This is called Vijaya Dashami. It is also a triumph of victory. The victory of truth over untruth.

GHATASTHAPANA

The Dashain festival began with Ghatasthapana on Thursday with Hindus across the country sowing barley seeds for jamara at their homes and temple. On this day, people clean up their houses early in the morning and prepare for Ghatasthapana, which literally means setting up the pot. ‘Ghata’ means pot and ‘sthapana’ means to establish. Hindu deity Ganesh is also worshiped on the day and kalasha (a vessel of holy water) and diyo (oil lamps) are placed at an altar dedicated for the ritual, before offering prayers.

JITIYA PARWA

Jitiya is an important festival of Nepali married women of Mithilanchal and Tharu woman of all castes. Jitiya vrata is performed for the wellbeing and long life of her sons. It is performed on Aswin Krishna Ashtmi usually during Pradosh time. Nepali women observe Nirjala fast (without water) on this day and break the fast next day on the end of Ashtami. Sometimes, when Ashtami begins in afternoon, women may have to fast for two days. Since nothing, even a drop of water, is put in mouth, the fast is also called Khar Jitia. The rituals are performed for the welfare of the son in the family during the period of Pitra Paksha every year. The mothers offer mustard oil and khilli to the female ancestors and Lord Jimutvahana. Bangles and curd are offered to the eagle and siyarin on this day by the mothers of the sons. Othgan Vidhi takes place before the sunrise and after that the mothers have to stop taking water also.

INDRA JATRA

Indra is Lord of Rain and the king of Heaven. Jatra is procession. Indra Jatra is celebration of God Indra’s Day. Indra Jatra is festival of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Some believes Indra Jatra is thanking day to lord Indra for the rain. According to others, the festival is celebrated in the honor of Bahirab, who is Shiva's manifestation and is believed to destroy evil. Indra Jatra begins every year from the day of the Bhadra Dwadasi to Ashwin Krishna Chaturdasi. It is a eight day long festival. This year it starts from September 08, 2014 and last through September 16, 2014. That is from Bhadra 23 to Bhadra 30, 2071 as per Nepali B.S Calendar. The official calendar day for the festival is on September 08, 2014.

SAMBIDHAN DIWAS

For the first time in the history of the country, the 65-years of aspiration of the people to make a constitution through the elected representatives of the people has come true. This was on the 2072 B.S. Asoj 3, Nepal's first President Ram Baran Yadav signed and approved the "Constitution of Nepal 2072". Today is the Asoj 3rd, the national constitution day of Nepal, the day to commemorate the promulgation of the Nepali constitution. The Constitution of Nepal 2072 brought by the contribution, sacrifice, penance, and sweat of thousands of Nepali has proved to be truly fruitful and auspicious. By the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nepal 2072 BS, Nepal has moved forward on the path of law and republican rule. According to the draft constitution signed by eight parties including the Maoists, the full constitution has been issued replacing the interim constitution issued on Magh 1st, 2063 BS.

HARITALIKA TEEJ VRATA

When we hear “Teej”, we remember our mom, grandmother in red sprees, dancing enjoying with their friends. “Teej” is one of the Hindu festivals that are celebrated by women in many parts of Nepal, India and now all over the world among Nepali and Indians. This is so popular in Nepal that it is a public holiday for women. It is celebrated on the third day of the lunar fortnight. It normally is celebrated one day before Ganesh Chaturthi. “Haitalika” is the combination of two Sanskrit words “Harat” (Kidnap) + “Aaliyah” (Female friend). It refers to the event that took place before mata Parvati got married to Lord Shiva. On the day of Haritalika Teej, women worship Lort Shiva & mata Parvati for blissful married life. They seek their blessing for a happy married life. Now a days unmarried girls also celebrate Teej and take “varta”(Fasting), to get the life partner of their choice. It used to be a tradition that married women would go to their parents house to celebrate teej, however it is not always possible now a days.

GAURA PARBA

Gaura Parwa has its roots deeply associated with the origin of the Nepali language and Khas kingdom. The search for the roots of Nepal's language and culture is of great importance in the Far Western landscape and its ancient background. In the far west, which is the origin of the Khas kingdom and the roots of language, culture, and civilization, the Gaura festival is celebrated by organizing various religious activities from the 6th to the 8th of Bhadra Shukla Paksha. Especially in Doti and Kumaon, Gauraparva has been celebrated since time immemorial.

SHREE KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI

GAIJATRA

Tracing back to the 17th century, Nepal King Pratap Malla lost his young son. The queen was immersed in the great misery and cried all day long. In order to cheer the queen up, the king held this cow festival. The folks dressed in the colorful costumes and the decorated cows symbolized the dead in this year. The king just wanted the queen to understand that she is not the only one who lost relatives and so many people have also lost their loved ones. Death is a natural phenomenon and no one can change it. The cow procession, drum music, masked dances became the highlights in this carnival. The queen eventually smiled and accepted the loss of her son.
